If you complete the nano-engineering program, for example, there are a variety of specializations that may appeal to you such as biotechnology, robotics research, or mechanical engineering. Nanotechnology is helping to revolutionize many technology and industry sectors, including materials science, renewable energy, biomedical technology, 3D printing and robotics manufacturing. At its most basic, nanotech relies on tailoring the structure of materials at an atomic or molecular scale, to achieve specific properties. Using nanotechnology, new materials can be fabricated that are stronger, lighter, and better electrical conductors, among other properties.

When particle sizes of solid matter in the visible scale are compared to what can be seen in a regular optical microscope, there is little difference in the properties of the particles. But when particles are created with dimensions of about 1–100 nanometers, the materials’ properties change significantly from those at larger scales. This is the size scale where quantum effects rule behavior and physical properties. Thus, when particle size is made to be nanoscale, properties such as melting point, fluorescence, electrical conductivity, magnetic permeability, and chemical reactivity change as a function of the size of the particle.

Biotechnology Programs

Biotechnology uses the DNA of living organisms to bioengineer new products artificially. Depending on the tools and applications, it often overlaps with the related fields of biomedicine, pharmacology, and genetic engineering. Modern biotech methods are used to manufacture existing medicines more easily, in order to treat human diseases. Further, biotechnology has enabled emerging techniques like gene therapy. Stem cell research offers new hope in the areas of cancer treatment as well as life extension. The regulation of genetic engineering aims to assess and manage the risks of developing genetically modified organisms (GMO), including commercial food crops and fish. Although mired in ethical debate, the fast-growing field of biotech offers many employment opportunities.

At the smallest scale, mechanical engineering becomes nanotechnology, one goal of which is to build molecules and materials via microsynthesis. Current areas of mechanical engineering research in nanotechnology include nanofilters, nanofilms, and nanostructures such as microtubules. Self-assembly of these structures may lead to new breakthroughs in artificial tissue generation. Micron-scale mechanical components such as springs, gears, and heat-transfer devices are fabricated from a variety of substrate materials such as silicon, glass and polymers like SU8. Biomechanics applies traditional engineering methodology to the analysis of biological systems. By copying the efficiency of nature, the study of biomechanics aids in creating prosthetic limbs and artificial organs for medical application.

The Fundamentals of Engineering exam should be taken immediately after earning a bachelors degree from an ABET-accredited program. Engineers who pass this exam are called engineers in training (EIT), or engineer interns. After meeting work experience requirements, engineer interns can attempt a second certifying exam, called the Principles and Practice of Engineering Exam.
